MATT BARRETT’S TALES FROM THE ROCK N ROLL CRYPT: Episode 3. |
BRICK Dorian Kokas was my musical mentor. He taught me a lot of songs and at every branch of my career he was there to set me in the right direction or totally destabilize me. Dorian was a decent musician. He was also the most egotistical musician I ever knew. But I didn’t care. Because if you are not egotistical you are not going to make it as a musician unless it’s as second guitarist in Huey Lewis’ band. But Dorian played in lots of bands in Greece. Some he was the leader and others the guy who continually battled with the leader because he thought he should be the leader. One band he was in was the house band for the New Democracy party which played at the conservative party’s political rallies. One night the bass player couldn’t make it and they needed a replacement. Dorian was the guitarist. He said not to worry. He would play bass. He knew all the songs and in his mind anyone can play bass. So they did the concert and the very first song Dorian takes a bass solo. (Yes. Really.) And in the midst of the booing somebody threw a brick on the stage which landed with a thud at Dorian's feet. After the show Dorian said “That was very dangerous. Someone could have been seriously hurt.” “And who brings a brick to a concert?” |
