MATT BARRETT’S TALES FROM THE ROCK N ROLL CRYPT: Episode 1.

MY BIGGEST FAN

Matt Barrett at The CaveIn the 80’s I probably played at The Cave more than anyone on earth. I had a small and occasionally appreciative audience. There was one guy who always sat at the front table and listened to my songs in rapt attention. I’d always meant to talk to him after a show since he seemed to be my most loyal fan but musicians being what we are I usually went straight from the stage to the nearest unattached female (if there were any still there). So I never talked to him. My biggest fan and I didn’t even know his name.

25 years later I saw him in a bar and apologized.

“For years I have wanted to thank you for coming to all my gigs and I’m kind of embarrassed that it has taken me this long to tell you this and I’m sorry. I really appreciated your support back then because you were my most loyal fan and I didn’t even know your name.”

“Who are you?” He asked.

“Matt Barrett” I said.

“Who?”

“Matt Barrett. I used to play at The Cave several times a month in the 80s and you were always there in the front row!”

“Sorry. It doesn’t ring a bell.” He said. “But I used to go to The Cave every night.”
